Roche Art Regional Finalist

Many congratulations to Canford artist Rebecca Alcaraz who has won through to the Regional finals of the prestigious Roche Art 2017 competition.   Her speech about a piece of work she had seen at the Hayward in London - Cyprien Gaillard, Nightlife, 2015 - was highly praised by adjudicator Professor Simon Olding for its excellent ‘discussion of the impact of the work set within a particular place’.   Rebecca was also commended for the quality of her communication of ‘the visceral presence of the work’ and Professor Simon enjoyed her comparison with other public art and questions around site specificity.

The ARTiculation Roche Art competition is held annually.  It was established 10 years ago by Madeline Bessborough, Director of New Art Centre and Lucy Salisbury, Head of Roche Court Educational Trust  in partnership with the Head of History of Art at Winchester College, Laurence Wolff.  It is designed to give young people a forum in which they are able to express their own ideas on art.

Rebecca's first round was held at Lord Wandsworth's College on 30th January against pupils from schools across the area, and as a result of her excellent talk she will now speak again at Roche Court on 7th March.  If successful at this event, she will attend the finals at Clare College, Cambridge.   We wish Rebecca the very best of luck.
