Festival of Ideas 2016

This year’s Festival of Ideas featured a week of lectures, discussions and activities based around the theme ‘What is Intelligence’.  We were very fortunate to host numerous engaging guest speakers who explored this thought-provoking question in the Layard Theatre, including Professor Rose Luckin who spoke to pupils about artificial and human intelligence, Major-General Peter Williams who discussed the military battle for intelligence, and Bela Hartmann who performed Beethoven’s Musical Intelligence – The Diabelli Variations.

Canford’s Head of Cultural Enrichment, John James, commented: “Whether we are scientists or artists, cynics or believers, computer savvy or still located somewhere in the dark ages of technology, we need to consider what it means to be alive in the world at this particular moment in its history. And if we want to thrive we need to equip ourselves with emotional and imaginative intelligence as well as rigorous logic.  These reflections led me to choose the title ‘What is Intelligence?’ for this year’s Festival of Ideas.”
