Athletics - Intermediate Girls Heptathlon Champion

Many congratulations to Fifth Former Bethan Burley who has been crowned the Intermediate Girls Heptathlon champion at the Somerset & Dorset Schools AA Combined Events Championships, held at Millfield over the weekend of 23/24 April.   This event not only determines the respective County champions in multi event athletics but is also used by a significant number of Nationally ranked athletes to post scores which may merit international qualification.

After a strong Day 1 performance during which she achieved two PBs, Bethan was in 3rd place.  With two no throws in the Javelin, she was left contemplating zero points if she did not record a final legal throw.   Displaying real character, Bethan threw a new PB to move to 2nd place just 16 points behind the leader.  In the final event, the 800m, she needed to beat the leader by at least 2 seconds to claim the title, and achieved this with a few seconds to spare.  Winning the title, Bethan set a new Championship performance best score of 4561 points which is above the UK Athletics target for expected top 10 national performances.

Congratulations also go to Hannah Sherborne who achieved a number of PBs in the Senior Heptathlon event and came 4th overall.  She also took the Dorset title after a fantastic 800m run moving her from 2nd to the winning position, with a points total of 3208.

Both Bethan and Hannah now move forward to the South West Schools Athletic Association Combined Events championships in June.

Natasha Wilson, Assistant Director of Sport and Head of Girls’ Games at Canford, commented:

“The Athletics achievement by these two girls is extremely impressive.  Both faced very strong competition from athletes across two counties and displayed real determination, controlling their nerves brilliantly particularly in the nail biting final stages.

To set a new record as Inter girls’ champion is National level Athletics standard for Bethan and bodes very well for her ongoing success in the sport.   To have two girls both as County champions as well is a real achievement.  We are all very proud of both Bethan and Hannah for their inspirational performances.”
