Top 5 Row for Girls’ Four at Schools’ Head

Canford sent four crews to the Schools’ Head of the River Race on the Tideway in London on Thursday 17th March.   With over 360 crews from schools across the country this is a highly competitive event and also a very exciting one, racing on the Tideway along the same stretch of river as the annual Boat Race.

All four Canford crews – Boys’ 1st VIII, Girls’ Senior Four and Boys’ and Girls’ J15 VIIIs – rowed the full four mile race and learned a great deal about pace, fighting for water with other crews, maintaining rhythm and steering a strong course.    The Boys’ 1st VIII came 20th in their category in a time of 19.43, the Boys’ J15 VIII 14th at 21.30 and the Girls’ J15 VIII 19th at 23.49 which were excellent results against many crews with significantly more experience of rowing on the Tideway.

Special mention goes to the Girls’ Senior Four who came 5th in their category in a cracking time of 22.20.   The Canford crew was made up of Lower Sixth and Fifth Formers yet many of their opponents were Upper Sixth boats.   Equally impressive was the fact that the four recorded timings well over a minute faster than some of the Girls’ VIIIs – half the number of blades but faster!  Their commitment and dedication and early morning sessions has certainly paid off.

Very many thanks to the Friends of Canford Rowing which provided the catering supplies and to all the parents and staff who supported us.  Another memorable Schools’ Head with some fine Canford performances.
