Swing Night Jazz Concert

The Friends of Canford Music held their annual jazz concert on Friday 26th February in the Music School.

Billed under the title of ‘Swing Night’, this popular event was once again a sell-out.  Guests were welcomed with canapés and drinks in the foyer before taking their seats for a wonderful evening of jazz music complemented by some stunning performances from individual singers.

The show opened with a rousing rendition of Strike up the Band by Gershwin, followed by well known numbers including Feeling Good, When I fall in Love, Dream a Little Dream of Me, Summertime, Mack the Knife and Cry me a River.  The Symphonic Wind Orchestra, including many Fourth and Fifth Formers, and had the audience tapping their feet to A Swinging Safari and Copacabana while All you need’s a Script by Canford’s Maurice Walters and Christopher Sparkhall was premiѐred within the programme.

The depth of musical talent among Canfordians, and the confidence with which they performed, were awe inspiring.  Everyone agreed with Director of Music Christopher Sparkhall’s comment at the end of the evening that the performances would not be out of place on the professional stage.
