Britten Sinfonia

Canford School Concert Hall, Thursday 21st January 2016, 7.30 pm

For the second year, Canford is delighted to welcome members of the Britten Sinfonia to the school. The ensemble will present a concert of chamber music at Canford from their ‘At Lunch’ series, first given earlier in the month in London’s Wigmore Hall. Four principal string players from this leading chamber orchestra are being joined by renowned soprano Julia Doyle and Marios Argiros (Oboe) and will perform arias from 2 Bach Cantatas (Gott versorget alles Leben and Seufzer, Tranen, Kummer, Not), as well as music by Scarlatti, Arvo Pärt and Ligeti. An exciting new work by composer Anna Clyne, This Lunar Beauty, completes the programme.

A pre-occupation with texture permeates the music for this concert, beginning with two arias from the grand master of counterpoint, J. S. Bach. Ligeti’s Continuum tests not only the limits of the soloist but also the exhilarating knife-edge between hearing individual notes and continuous sound. A world premiere from Grammy-nominated composer of acoustic and electro-acoustic music, Anna Clyne, whose music seeks to explore resonant soundscapes and propelling textures, completes the journey from the baroque to present day.

During the week of this concert, the musicians from the Britten Sinfonia will be in residence at Canford, working with pupils in both composing and performing masterclasses and workshops. Director of Music, Christopher Sparkhall, said, ‘we are extremely lucky to have such excellent and accomplished musicians visiting and working with us for the week. Last year’s public concert was an exceptional occasion, and this year’s promises to be every bit as good! The workshops and masterclasses are being generously supported by an Old Canfordian.

Tickets are just £14 or £10, and are available from or by phone on 01202 847486. As with all concerts at Canford, this event is open to the public.
