The Sixth Form

"How to put into a few short words the laughter, sadness and amazement I've shared with pupils and staff during my Sixth Form years?  The ethos is one of teamwork, friendliness and integrity - an atmosphere that can only ever truly be felt by living and working at Canford, seeing how it shapes the people that come and go."
Former pupil

There are approximately 260 pupils in the Sixth Form at Canford.   The average class size is 10 in the Lower Sixth, and 9 in the Upper Sixth.   Progress is closely monitored on a variety of levels and pupils can expect the same personal tutor for two years who provides support not only for academic matters but also on a pastoral level.  Among fellow pupils there is also an atmosphere of mutual support.

Academic Life

Pupils generally take four subjects to AS level with three to A2 or Pre-U.   Encouragement is given to undertake an Extended Project Qualification which offers the opportunity to study a particular topic in greater depth.

Beyond the curriculum there is a diverse lecture programme, with visiting writers, resident artists and scientists.   An annual Sixth Form Symposium is designed to challenge preconceptions and provoke debate and creative thought.  There are also thriving Sixth Form subject societies.

Activities and Trips

Pupils often speak of the high quality and range of opportunities at Canford in co-curricular life to develop talents and interests beyond the classroom.  There are annual trips abroad for academic, sporting or cultural reasons, and to help with community projects in Argentina, Ghana, Tanzania and India.

There is also a weekly programme of voluntary work in the local community, ranging from teaching in primary schools, to work with disadvantaged youngsters in inner city areas, to helping with environmental projects.  Pupils can take part in the CCF, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and Canford's own Adventure Training programme for outdoor pursuits including camping, climbing, canoeing, caving and trekking.

There are more than 25 additional clubs to choose from.

Sixth Form Centre

The Sixth Form Centre is both a place for socialising and a work area for Sixth Formers.  A quiet workspace on the upper floor is complemented by a ground floor social area with sofas, a TV and a kitchen.    It provides a central meeting point for pupils and an alternative to going back to House.
